Former Home Secretary, Rt Hon David Blunkett MP, today welcomed moves to outlaw clamping on private land outlined by the Lib Dem/Tory coalition – while noting that it was the second time in a week that the Government had “stolen its predecessors’ clothes”.
Mr Blunkett was commenting on the announcement by the Home Office that the Government will include in its so-called “freedom Bill” this autumn a provision to outlaw the clamping of vehicles on private land.
The Labour Government passed a Crime and Security Act before it left office which would have regulated clamping firms. Mr Blunkett today revealed a letter which he sent to Home Secretary Theresa May on 9 August calling for the Act to be implemented, following the distress experienced by residents at a shopping centre in his own constituency earlier this month.

Mr Blunkett said: “I welcome any action that implements the previous, Labour Government’s policies – but this is twice in a week, following the announcement about the ‘ending’ of mixed-sex wards, that the coalition have proclaimed Labour policy to be their own initiative.
“We can expect more of this during the rest of August. It has to be the most audacious example of stealing predecessors’ clothes in recent political memory.”
