Rt Hon David Blunkett, MP for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough, has welcomed an award of £10,000 given to Burngreave Youth Development Centre by the Big Lottery Fund.
The money will go towards the setting-up of the Centre, including internet and telephone connections and volunteer transport costs. It will also provide social activities for young people and is aimed at helping to reduce anti-social behaviour in the local area.
At a time when the Lib Dem leadership of Sheffield City Council are cutting thousands of pounds to youth development projects, Mr Blunkett welcomed the grant.
Mr Blunkett said: “Of course, this money cannot replace what is being pulled by the Government and the Council.
“However, it is a recognition of the willingness of people locally to help themselves – and the determination that there is in our community to stand by young people as they try and do a good job of self-help.”
