Rt Hon David Blunkett, MP for Sheffield Brightside & Hillsborough, has challenged the Liberal Democrat/Conservative coalition to make an immediate decision on the future of the Government’s special loan to Sheffield Forgemasters.
Mr Blunkett was reacting to the announcement by the Treasury that it is reviewing all Government decisions on funding taken since 1 January – including the £80 million loan to Forgemasters previously announced by Labour’s former Business Secretary Lord Mandelson.
Mr Blunkett said: “After the freezing of school rebuilding projects and the threat to the renewal of roads, drainage and lighting in Sheffield from this new government, indecision by the coalition on a major manufacturing project with worldwide significance is the last thing that the city needs.
“The Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, should get his finger out and tell his Lib Dem colleagues – Business Secretary Vince Cable and Chief Secretary David Laws – to let Forgemasters get on with creating jobs and providing much-needed overseas earnings from international trade.”
