Rt Hon David Blunkett, MP for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough, today challenged the new Energy Secretary, the Liberal Democrat Chris Huhne, during the Queens Speech debate on energy and climate change in the House of Commons.
Mr Blunkett pressed Mr Huhne on what assurances he could give to Sheffielders that the "personal opposition" of the Energy Secretary and Business Secretary Vince Cable to nuclear power "will not get in the way of confirming the substantial beneficial loan to Forgemasters and their ability to create jobs to produce for the world, and to be able to export to the world the tremendous forging capacity for nuclear that was agreed by the last government”.
Speaking after the debate, Mr Blunkett said: "It is vital that the continuing uncertainty is immediately lifted and Forgemasters can go ahead with the substantial investment and beneficial outcome from agreement reached with the former Business Secretary, Lord Mandelson, earlier in the year.
“There can be no excuse for the continuing delay in confirming backing for a programme that will bring not only jobs to Sheffield, but much needed earnings to the United Kingdom.”
