For immediate release
Rt Hon David Blunkett, MP for Sheffield Brightside, has reacted to the selection of a new British National Party candidate for the Sheffield Brightside & Hillsborough seat at the General Election after the arrest and suspension from the BNP of his previous opponent, Mark Collett.
The BNP have selected John Sheldon, who has entered the campaign by calling for Mr Blunkett to be tried for war crimes and by stating that he will focus on Mr Blunkett’s allowances claims.
Mr Blunkett responded by restating that he had been asked to repay no allowances and that the comprehensive review by Sir Thomas Legg had concluded that his claims were entirely proper – and that any suggestion to the contrary would be met by legal action.
Mr Blunkett added: “This would be taking the biscuit – but no-one is going to be astonished by a group of individuals who declare war on each other and then have the audacity to talk about others in the context of international conflict.
“Whichever name is on the ballot paper, the electorate will treat this bunch with the contempt they deserve.”
